
Although we have emotinal peaks and troughs, overall happiness is pretty much stable throughout adulthood. A recent German study found that, while major highs and lows cause our happiness 'spring' to stretch, it eventually returns to its normal state. For instance, the study calculates that a post-childbirth high lasts 2 years, and the low caused by unemployment tends to last no longer than 5 years. It seems time can, indeed, be a great healer.
