Anyone planning to watch "The Hunger Games" which opens in local cinemas this week? I have not heard of the movie and the popular young adults novel trilogy till my cousin mentioned on Wednesday that she was rushing to finish reading the book so that she can watch the movie yesterday. I was attracted to its interesting plot after i read about it on "The Straits Times" Thursday. Those who enjoys watching "Harry Potter" and "Twilight" might also be interested in the book series and movie.
The much anticipated big-screen adaptation of the year will bring author Suzanne Collins' 2009 best-selling story of a harsh dystopian future, where humans are subjected to a televised brutal battle against one another to survive. In the ruins of a
place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem a shining
Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh
and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send
one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to
participate in the annual Hunger Games a fight to the death on live TV. It brings together sixteen year-old Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer
Lawrence), her best friend; Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth) and Peeta
Mellark (Josh Hutcherson).
Sixteen-year-old
Katniss Everdeen who lives alone with her mother and
younger sister regards those send for The Hunger Game as a death
sentence and her frail younger sister has frequent nightmares of being
the chosen one. Katniss is the sole provider of her family after
her father died in a
mining accident. She makes a living by illegally hunting with Gale in
the forest borders
of her district and selling her catch in the Hob, District 12's black
market. As Katniss' childhood best friend and hunting partner, Gale
Hawthorne's
dad had also died in a mining accident hence their close bond. He has
been harboring a crush for Katniss. She replaced her younger sister to
take part in the
annual Hunger Games when she was selected and has to rely on her skills
and wits to survive. But Katniss has been close to dead
before-and survival for her is second nature. Without really meaning to
she becomes a contender.
Things
however get complicated when she meets Peeta on the field much to her
childhood best friend’s dismay. Peeta harbours a secret crush for
Katniss since he was 5-years-old but never had the courage to reveal it
until the Games. Described as a romantic, Peeta also strives to do
whatever it takes to make sure Katniss survives the deadly games. But if Katniss is to win she will have to start
making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against
love. Gale is saddened with the televised budding love between Katniss and Peeta during the games.
I managed to watch the movie with hubby yesterday and plans to get its ebook trilogy to read on my iPad 2 today. I highly recommend the movie to those who are looking for something to do this weekend as it is easy to follow the plot even if you have not read the book and hubby and i love the movie and are already looking forward to the "Catching Fire" which is the second part of "The Hunger Games". I was impressed with lead actress Jennifer Lawrence's natural acting and portrayal of main character Katniss Everdeen. She really brings the kickass attitude of Katniss alive while showing her vulnerable side too. The April 2012 issue of my favorite Cosmopolitan magazine also features the lovely Jennifer Lawrence as its cover girl and do grab a copy to find out more.
