I found out while reading the Urban supplement from the 23 January 2009 edition of The Straits Time that as part of the celebrations for Barbie's fiftieth birthday in March, the city is set to open the largest (3-500-square-meter, 6 floors of Barbie products and activities for Barbie lovers) Barbie store in the world in Shanghai this month!!! It’s a place where everything is ultra-pink, ultra-girly and flooded with fantastically plastic little blonde dolls. It comes complete with a spa, a café, a design center and a fashion runway and is located in the downtown area of the city on Huai Hai Road, close to H&M and other fashion retailers.
The shop's Barbie wall will show various unique Barbie dolls that were created over the past half century. For the launch of the flagship store, Mattel has created a Barbie Shanghai (picture above), which will be on sale from the opening onwards. Too bad i'm only going Beijing and not Shanghai, if i had heard of the news earlier i would definitely go Shanghai too!!
Born Barbara Millicent Roberts on March 9, 1959, in Willows, Wisconsin, Barbie, the 11 ½-inch, or 29-centimeter, tall doll, is the top-selling toy in the world, according to the market research company NPD Group. She has traveled the world and worked more than 100 different jobs over the past half century. But Barbie's real profession is clothes horse. The doll's manufacturer, Mattel, has estimated that more than one billion fashion items have been created for Barbie and her friends in the collection since 1959.
