Stop dining in front of the TV. Research shows that digestion may be 30 to 40 per cent less effective if you eat while multi-tasking. Besides distress such as gas, bloating and bowel irregularities, mindless eating can also lead to overeating. When your mind is tuned out during meals, the event is not registered as "eating" and the brain continues sending out hunger signals. To avoid this, Harvard dietician Stephanie Meyers recommends "mindful eating". Take time to savour your meals without distration. Focus on the sensations as you bite, taste and swallow.
