This is one drama that i feel is quite interesting and the plot refreshing as it is about a group of youngster reaching out to their dream of being a star and those who love Kpop will definitely love this drama as it features several Kpop stars like Suzy from Miss A, Taecyeon from 2PM, Ham Eun Jung from T-ara and teenage singing sensation IU as the main characters of the drama. The show is being produced by Hallyu actor-producer-businessman Bae Yong-joon and kpop hitmaker Park Jin-young, both of whom also acted in the drama. Bae Yong-joon stars as the Chairman of the board of Kirin Foundation, which operates Kirin Art High School where the main characters in the story attends to achieve their dream towards stardom. Park Jin-young stars as an English teacher in the school who also ended up coaching the kids in their singing skills. Kim Hyun-joong made a special guest cameo in the first episode playing as himself. The adult cast also features actors like Eom Ki-joon and Lee Yoon-ji as teachers at Kirin.
I started watching this 16 episodes drama on my Ipad 2 days ago and i love the songs featured in the drama. This drama is almost like the Korean version of GLEE although abit more dramatic with more evil plottings ;) I have been looking forward to watching this drama when it first debuted in Korea in January 2011 and subsequently on KBS World but i was busy watching other dramas and it has been on my "To Watch Drama List" for awhile :) You can also watch the drama online at http://www.dramacrazy.net/korean-drama/dream-high/ or http://www.mysoju.com/korean-drama/dream-high/ or http://www.jacinda1st.org/2011/04/dream-high-english-subtitles/.
However i have been hooked on the drama since i started watching it and watched episode 5 last night and love the scene where Hye-mi sung "Winter Child" for her music assessment and it is a song with memories in the past between her and Jin-gook. She reminisced those times and truly sang from her heart as she looked at him the entire time which is really sweet and touching. She then solely received 100 points and had the pleasure of beating Yoon Baek-hee. "Dream High" has attracted many people's attention with 2PM Tacyeon, Miss A Suzy, T-ara Ham Eun-jeong and more idol stars in its cast. Their acting was at first criticized, but as the drama goes on, their acting also seems to be getting comfortable. It's also giving pleasure to the eyes and ears as it is full of dancing and singing.
This drama will have a second season due to its popularity in Korea and it had a viewer rating of over 20%. Season 2 will deal with new students instead of the first batch and should debut in Korea in 2012.
Dream High Season 1 tells the story of youths becoming top global stars which could take place in the not-so-distant future. You may have the looks, talent, personality and even a respectable private life, but it's still tough to rise as a successful star. Here is a group of youths who are still up for this daring challenge. They all have a single weakness barring them becoming the ultimate top star. The weaknesses wouldn't be an issue or an inconvenience to an ordinary person, but they are detrimental to a pop star.
One girl sings really well but her appearance is not the best to stand before the TV camera. Another student has the looks and musical talent but has a distorted, prejudiced view of the world. There are others who have amazing talent but an unsophisticated fashion sense. Each of these students have managed to pass the exam and enter Kirin Arts High School to begin headlong the challenge of becoming a top superstar. The characters maximize their unique talents and overcome their weaknesses. They fall, trip and fail which only boosts their confidence. The ridicule and scorn they are used to will one day turn into cheers and support. The underdogs and the losers will fly up high and their story will be an inspiration to young viewers.
The drama focuses on six students at Kirin Art High School who work to achieve their dreams of becoming music stars in the Korean music industry. Go Hye Mi (Suzy) is a student who had majored in classical music but has to give up her dream by entering Kirin Art High School to pay off her father’s debt. However, she needs to get two other students to also come to the school in order for her to enroll in the school conditionally. These two students are Song Sam Dong (Kim Soo Hyun), who lives in the countryside, and Jin Guk (Taecyeon), whom she accidentally meets while trying to escape from a loan shark. Yoon Baek Hee (Ham Eun Jung), formerly Hyemi’s sidekick, becomes her rival in school because Hye Mi betrays her during an audition to enter the school.
Character Description:
Kim Soo Hyun plays Song Sam Dong, a young man who lives in a small town and dreams to have his own farm since he was a child. One day, he meets a Seoul girl named Hye Mi and he falls for her at first sight. Sam Dong follows her to the Kirin arts high school, where he discovers his hidden talent in music and starts his path to becoming a star.
Taecyeon plays Jin Guk, whose real name is Hyun Shi Hyuk. He was left in the orphanage by his single mother at a young age. Shi Hyuk was then adopted by his paternal grandfather Hyun Mu Jin, who is also a rich businessman and CEO. Shi Hyuk was not happy in that household and was treated like an invisible person, so he decides to start a new life with the name Jin Guk. While dancing on the street with a group of friends, he gets recruited by the chairman of Kirin Arts High School who had noticed his talents in becoming a world star.
Suzy plays Go Hye Mi, a rich and beautiful arts student who is rude and is used to be the best at everything. When her father’s business fails, Hye Mi decides to give up on vocal training and pursue an education at the Kirin to become a pop singer, which she previously thought was crude and shallow. She is also the love interest of Sam Dong and Jin Guk.
Ham Eun Jung plays Yoon Baek Hee, a close friend of Hye Mi who doesn’t mind being her number two. She is often ignored by those around her, even her mother. Baek Hee then follows Hye Mi to audition for Kirin. There, she transforms from an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan and discovers her own dream. She will later become the biggest rival of Hye Mi.
Wooyoung plays Jason, an aspiring dancer who has just came back from New Jersey and enter the Kirin Arts High School. His superior dance skills make Jin Guk nervous, and his singing talent threatens Sam Dong. However, Jason has no interest in competing with others; he only enjoys what he is doing
IU plays Kim Pil Suk, a girl who has low self esteem because she was often teased about her “ugly” face. Her impressive vocal skills leads her to Kirin where she can pursue her dream as a singer. She falls for Jason right away.
